Deadly High‑Speed Train Crash in Southern Spain: At Least 39 People Killed

On the evening of Sunday, 18 January 2026, a catastrophic train accident in southern Spain killed at least 39 people and injured dozens more in one of the country’s deadliest rail disasters in recent history.

What Happened?

The collision occurred at around 19:39 local time near Adamuz, a small town in the province of Córdoba, on the high‑speed rail line connecting Madrid and Andalusia.

Authorities say that one high‑speed train — an Iryo service traveling from Málaga to Madridderailed while moving at high speed, crossed over onto the opposite track and collided head‑on with a second high‑speed train operated by Renfe that was headed from Madrid to Huelva.

The impact was devastating: several carriages from both trains were wrecked, with some tumbling down an embankment. Rescue teams worked through the night to free passengers trapped in the twisted metal.
