Weather forecasters have issued a flash flood warning to people living near rivers and in low-lying valleys in central and northern Laos.
According to a statement from the Head of the Weather Forecasting and Aeronautical Division under the Meteorology and Hydrology Department, Ms Souvanny Phonevilay, heavy storms in the next few days may also cause landslides and strong winds in some areas.
The extreme weather conditions are caused by tropical storm Mindulle, currently in the South China Sea and moving west at 20km per hour. Yesterday the storm brought medium to heavy thunderstorms to Champassak, Attapeu and Xekong provinces.
The division forecast that most central and southern parts of the country will experience heavy rainfall today. With Borikhamxay and Khammuan provinces to receive similar weather tomorrow.
Mindulle is expected to make landfall in central Vietnam on August 25 and move into northern Laos on the morning of August 26.
The division urged residents living near rivers and in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow forecasts issued by the division.
