New airports planned in Laos

VIENTIANE - A new airport will be built in the southernmost province of Laos, Attapeu, at an estimated cost of US$46 million, to attract tourists and investors to the remote, undeveloped area.

Phetmixay Khampakdy, director of Attapeu's Public Works and Transport Department, told the Vientiane Times that the new airport would be operational by 2014.

Attapeu, which borders Vietnam and Cambodia, is rich in history, handicrafts and natural attractions. Its key tourist attractions include the 16th-century Saysetthatthirath pagoda, three waterfalls on the Xepain River and Attapeu pottery vases used to store rice wine.

Phetmixay said the airport, which is being built by Vietnam's Hoang Anh Gia Lia Group, would be able to accommodate twin-turboprop, short-haul regional aircraft in its first phase.
Currently, tourists wishing to visit Attapeu must fly to Pakse International Airport, 200 kilometres north-west of Attapeu, then continue their journey by bus or car.

They are also talks to develop another regional airport in Huaphan province. The district of Viengxay is already one of the most attractive destinations in the country due to its caves which used to accommodate revolutionary leaders back to the Vietnam War in the sixties and early seventies. In 2011, about 13,000 people have visited the caves where former Laotian President Kaysone Phomvihane lived and worked, including 2,800 foreigners, but this figure does not include Vietnamese and Chinese tourists. Some 500 caves can be visited in the province. The construction of an airport would then help to turn eventually Viengxay into Laos third most visited destination.

At the moment, not many tourists make it to the province because it’s a two day bus trip from Vientiane. Studies for the new airport begun last year to look at developing an airfield which could accommodate aircraft as large as an ATR 72-500 (capacity of 74 passengers).
