EU backs food security in Laos

(KPL) Experts, implementing agencies involved in European Union-funded food security and food facility projects, government partners as well as other donors and agencies active in food security in Laos met in Vientiane yesterday to discuss on-going initiatives.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Sitaheng Rasphone, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, and Ambassador David Lipman, Head of the Delegation of the European Union.

The purpose of the meeting is to contribute to the smooth implementation of EU�s co-funded action and to kick off the new projects financed under the Food Security Thematic Programme and Food Facility. This event will also provide a forum for exchanging information on food security and project coordination with concrete example taken from the field.

�Food security features as a key element of European Union development assistance to Laos and is vital to reducing poverty. We work with a variety of partners to implement actions and this meeting helps us fine tune our approach so as to maximise the benefits for those who need help most,� said Ambassador David Lipman.

The European Union, through its Food Security Programme and Food Facility intended to address the food crisis worldwide, funds fifteen projects worth more than 17 million Euros. Located in almost all provinces of Laos, activities have been aimed to reduce food insecurity and undoubtedly poverty at household level.
